If you like colour this is the season for you. This Spring you are going to be dancing, walking, playing with your kids in a arena of bright yellows, orange and greens. You may want to pick up one piece in one of these colours as it is a trend so who knows what will be in this time next year.
The malls are crawling with tops, purses and belts to brighten your day.
Speaking of belts the wider the better. Be sure you have the body shape to carry it off. Just because it is in season and in style does not mean you have to wear it. Fashion trends also have to match your lifestyle and your own personal style.

Wide legged trouser jeans are also a hit this Spring season along with the “tribal” look. Go easy on this one. There are not a lot of people that carry this look off.

Your best bet is a stunning new Trench Coat. This is where you can really have some fun with colour.

Three quarter length sleeves are still big as well as puffy sleeves. This does not work for everyone so be sure to shop with a trusted person to get their opinion.

If your budget does not allow for extravagance then add some new accessories and a bright red lipstick. You will update your existing wardrobe with that small change.

Several people are wondering if you can lose weight going in the hottub.. well the answer from my research is no… what you can do is do a good workout and then soak in it..(shower first)Don’t stay in longer than 15min and no drinking of alcohol, the combination of heat and alcohol can cause a person to lose consciousness and drown!

Beyond drowning, hot tubs do present some other, less serious health risks. We often want to get into the hot tub after a long workout, but a hot tub can raise a woman’s body temperature to dangerous levels. If a person has already been working their body, the additional stress of a hot tub may result in dehydration, lightheadedness, nausea and extreme weakness. Take a few minutes after your workout to bring your heart rate down, before jumping into the hot tub, and make sure that you always stay well hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you, this goes for steam rooms and saunas as well.

Hot tubs can lead to infections. Skin rashes, infections of the hair follicles, and ear infections are the most common. These can result from either bacteria in the water, or from the cleansing agents and corrosive agents applied to the tub. Repeated exposure to these agents can also do quite a number on your skin.

If a woman has a history of bladder infections she should avoid hot tubs. Raising the temperature of the tub will not make a difference, it may only increase the risk of scalding her skin.

Hot tubs should also be avoided by older people who already have lowered immune systems. They are more vulnerable to the bacteria that may be in the water. Older people and people with weak immune systems have been known to develop pneumonia and legionnaire’s disease. Bathing longer in the tub and later in the day has been associated with increased risk of disease.

One other serious concern pertains to pregnant women. Elevating a pregnant woman’s core temperature during neural tube formation (during the first 28 days of gestation) carries a risk of poor spinal development for the fetus.

Bathing in a hot tub does has risks but it also has its benefits. For many people, soaking in a hot tub is a much needed break from sometimes dangerous levels of stress. For others it is a way to soak over worked muscles. Hot tubs can remain a fairly risk free experience as long as a person pays attention to safety, hygiene and their general health.

Dr. Oz was talking about hot tubs on Oprah and also mention that men should not stay in too long as it may contribute to infertility.

Happy New Year everyone and hope you had a great holiday season! As wonderful as it is in this special season it also brings some concerns afterwards. For example.. Credit bills and weight gain. What I am going to talk about is the weight gain and how to lose those extra pounds you may have gained. The average weight gain this time of year is 7-12 lbs! That is about the same one would gain on a cruise! My first suggestion would be for you to come up with a plan on how to lose the extra pounds you have put on or have on you. There are several tips I can give you
1.Do a cleanse and the one I recommend is the product Isagenix(for more info go to cleasemiracle.isagenix.com) I started this last year at this time and lost 20 lbs and have kept it off!
2. reduce calorie intake of 500 calories a day
3. increase your activity- building muscle ie weight training and aerobics is a great combination
4. drink 8 glasses of water a day
5. cut of starches ie. potatoes, rice , corn , bread,, you can eventually add these back in!
6.journal your food and water intake as well as exercise, how you felt that day etc

Here are some important facts:
-Jumping rope is the best aerobic activity , you can burn up to 600 calories a hr at a moderate pace, however who is going to do one hour of rope jumping.. mix it up with treadmill, jogging or elliptical(Cross train)
-moderate running, swimming, or cycling burn 400-500 calories a hour
-get a heart rate monitor that also registers your calorie burn…I got one for christmas..
-burn calories by eating(make sure you eat small meals or healthy snacks- don’t starve yourself or your metabolism will shut down and your body will start storing the fat. you need to eat to lose weight .. of course healthy food.. lots of protein instead of carbs.. instead of a piece of bread go for a piece of low fat cheese or unsalted almonds. 2 hard boiled eggs are great!
-cold weather helps us burn more calories as we move more to keep warm
-use spices in food, chili and cayenne pepper is good, this increased metabolism

Did you know that if you do short burst of activity (5 mins every hour) is just as good as one hour workout a day?
Snacks under 100 calories.. 1/2 english muffin with one teaspoon of peanut butter, 20 jelly beans, and 2 cups of watermelon cubes
Almonds unsalted are 7 calories a piece as well as have the good fats, lots of protein as well as fiber.
Last but not least enhance your calorie burning by drinking ice water and add lemon(drink through a straw as lemon not to mention ice water can be sensitive on your teeth!

There are many more things I could tell you but start with this. Also read my articles (written by Marilyn) on my weight loss journey on this site.
All the best and start making changes today not tomorrow!

I was watching the news this am and saw an interesting segment on “nasal irrigation”. What will they think of next! What you actually do is purchase what looks like a teapot- called a “netipot”, put warm water in it and put your head over the sink, put the spout in your nose and turn your head to the side, run the water through your nose and it comes out the other side of your nose. Oprah and Dr Oz were talking about it on her show and I guess Oprah does this!
Apparently this is good for colds, sinus problems and allergies. They mentioned that it feels good and has helped many with these kinds of problems. If Oprah and Dr. Oz recommend it , it must be good right?
Here’s to nasal cleansing , now every orifice of our body we can cleanse!

Kids do best with a routine. Kids want to do some activities. Kids more then anything need and want free time to relax and play.

Sit down as a family and decide what one activity each child wants to do per season. One activity is probably best as the demands of school just keep getting greater. Your date book is probably over flowing as well. Make a schedule of who will be in charge of driving each child to which activity. Look into car pooling especially if more then one kid needs to be in two different places at the same time.

Use a different colour marker for each child and their activity. Mark all the kids activities on one calendar. This way each kid can check their schedule at a quick glance. Even the youngest of children can see when they need to get somewhere. Be sure to schedule in family time in a different colour.
Keeping life simple and balanced means harmonious, happy kids.
